Andrew Carter says goodbye to Smallhold

After almost 8 fulfilling years at Smallhold, a vertical farming company focusing on specialty mushrooms, co-founder Andrew Carter says goodbye to Smallhold. "It's been a journey, building a national mushroom brand with farms throughout the US, inventing new growing technology, and feeding millions of people with healthy, organic, specialty mushrooms. We changed minds with mushrooms..."

It all started with a DIY-spawn lab in Andrew's basement back in 2015 where he and Adam DeMartino started experimenting with mushrooms. Soon after that, the company grew into a team of over 100 people across the country. Together, they were able to reach an impressive two million pounds per year in over 1100 stores across the United States.

When we visited Smallhold's New York office in 2022, Andrew shared the company's plans for rolling our Macrofarms (large warehouse farms) that allow them to cultivate large numbers of mushrooms locally. Then, Andrew already let us know that we could expect to see more farming facilities opening up over the years, and they did! Smallhold's newest LA facility was on the list the next year for VerticalFarmDaily. In the same year, Smallhold was recognized to be the fastest-growing fresh mushroom brand across Whole Foods.

Andrew Carter

Andrew expressed his gratitude by sharing, "Thank you for being part of the Smallhold journey so far, many of you reading this have had some part to play, even if it's just eating one of our oysters every now and then."

So what's next for him? Given he hasn't seen his two-year-old for a few weeks is going to spend some quality time with him for a while. However, Andrew is very eager to continue to support Smallhold through this transition and will be looking for the next frontier very very soon.
