Fungi Valley:

Downtown indoor farm grows gourmet mushrooms

When Will Pfeffer began growing gourmet, specialty mushrooms out of his closet at his home in Los Feliz during the pandemic, he never would have imagined his hobby transforming into a full-blown business.

Now, the sustainable indoor farm supplies fungi to several high-end restaurants and vendors at 10 farmers' markets across the city, including Downtown, Atwater Village, Brentwood, Mar Vista, Pacific Palisades, and Silver Lake. "We are offering the freshest mushrooms available," Pfeffer said. "We like to treat our mushrooms like you would a fresh piece of fish or meat. We believe in the power of fresh food."

In the coming months, the team plans to launch a medicinal supplement line containing compounds from functional mushrooms like lion's mane, reishi, chaga and turkey tail mushrooms, which have been shown in clinical trials to improve cognitive function and memory loss. Pfeffer and his team have been developing the supplements for the last few years using in-house mushrooms and sweetened with locally sourced fruits.
