Germany:

"Hydroponics is part of the solution for saving resources"

For two years, Kay Plat and Alexander Jaworski have been growing herbs, fruit, and vegetables in Leipzig using a method known as hydroponics. The plants are placed in water and nutrients are added. Although most staple foods are still grown in soil, Plat sees many advantages in this method: "It's part of the solution for how we can conserve resources" because it reduces the water consumption by 95 percent and saves fertilizer.

The ten-person company is constantly testing new plants. "We even tried growing watermelons," says Plat. "The heaviest one weighed three kilos." However, his company mainly earns money by passing on its experience to large indoor farmers. They are particularly interested in the optimization of software and hardware tailored to the plants.
