South African supermarket retailer SPAR Group reported a marginal decline in half-year earnings, as group revenue from continuing operations remained steady at 66.1bln rand ($3.70bln). Group operating profit increased by 1.6% to 1.5bln rand, supported by improved cost discipline, with its operating margin stable at 2.2%.

UK: Aldi to support young cancer patients in new tomato-led fundraiser
Aldi is joining forces with Teenage Cancer Trust in a new fundraising campaign aimed at helping young people aged 13-24 who are facing cancer. Starting Monday 2 June, the discounter is to donate proceeds from sales of its 220g Specially Selected Piccolato Tomatoes over a two-week period, with the initiative expected to raise £25,000 for the charity.

An alert has been issued to UK households buying fruit or vegetables at Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Lidl amid hopes grocery bills could be cheaper. Due to new UK and European Union ties, planned checks on fruits and vegetables coming into the UK which were due to start this month have been scrapped. Items classed as 'medium risk' going forward including tomatoes, grapes, plums, cherries, peaches and peppers can now be imported without the additional associated checks or fees.

US: Online orders to make up 17% of all grocery sales by end of 2029

US: Dollar General Q1 results exceed expectations
Net sales at Dollar General Corp. climbed 5.3% to $10.4bln in its first quarter, ended May 2, compared with $9.9bln in the first quarter of 2024. Dollar General reported net income of $391.9mln for Q1, an increase of 7.9%. Diluted EPS grew 7.9% to $1.78, compared with last year's $1.65.
