From a patio filled with 150 potted plants to a fully automated grow system, Coral Springs resident Brianne Oliveira has turned a home experiment into her new venture: Roots & Shoots Microgreen Farm. The 30-year-old former chef said she now produces up to 80 trays of microgreens and edible flowers each week. Her business model is simple — harvest to order, deliver within 24 hours — giving customers across Broward, North Dade, and South Palm Beach counties a fresher option than what they'd find in stores, she said.
"I truly believe this is the future of farming," Oliveira said. "Microgreens changed my own health and peace of mind. I wanted to provide that same access to others while creating something sustainable."
Roots & Shoots specializes in microgreens — small plants with big flavor and concentrated nutrients. Oliveira said her long-term vision is to expand into a warehouse, adding hydroponic herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and mushrooms. Beyond taste and nutrition, she points to the environmental upside: vertical farming uses 95% less water, avoids pesticides, and reduces the carbon footprint by keeping food local.
"In restaurants, I'd see boxes of food shipped from Peru or South America. By the time it reaches us, it's at the end of its life," Oliveira said. "I want to change that by keeping food local, fresh, and nutrient-rich."
