Moving away from substrate:

A propagation and plant-growing device in one

"After much anticipation, our Hydrostarter is finally available for purchase on our website. But that's not all, we've also secured a patent for our reusable propagation device. It's a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation," says Matthias Dicks, the Co-founder of Sinterra. The startup is set to reduce the use of substrate in hydroponic-, aeroponic, and aquaponic farming setups to shrink the environmental footprint in CEA.

With excitement, Matthias shares the latest updates on their main product, the Hydrostarter which is distinguished through its commitment to reducing waste. "Not only is it reusable after each growing cycle, but it's also recyclable. Plus, by omitting peat as a substrate, we're actively countering the destruction of vital bog lands," he explains.

"It's an incredibly exciting time to introduce our product to the world. Given climate change on the rise and farmable land dwindling, there's a growing need for controlled environment agriculture. And from a business perspective, we're addressing a very real problem of disposable substrates."

Collaboration and investment
Looking ahead to the future, Matthias outlines their ambitious plans for 2024. Eager to gather feedback from customers to refine its product for series production. On top of that, the startup is actively seeking partnerships with firms and research institutions, as well as investors to scale up production.

Root development in the Hydrostarter

When asked about the versatility of their product, Matthias beams with enthusiasm as he explains that Sinterra's solution works with most crops. "However, at the moment we're particularly focused on pilled lettuce seeds, a promising start to our journey towards sustainable agriculture."

As the conversation turns to price, Matthias acknowledges the current cost but hints at a brighter future. "Admittedly, the price point reflects our pre-series production phase. However, rest assured, that as we ramp up production and receive larger orders, the cost will decrease significantly. Given the reusability of our Hydrostarters, the price per growing cycle is just a fraction of this."

A sprouting seedling

In the eyes of Matthias and the team at Sinterra, the Hydrostarter isn't just a product but truly a symbol for a more sustainable future. Especially through the recycling aspect of the product and its long-term durability.

"With each seed planted, we're sowing the seeds of change, one Hydrostarter at a time."
