Central Ohio stands to pick up 240 jobs from two projects that received approval for state tax incentives on Monday, including plans by crafts and fabric retailer Joann to build a distribution center in West Jefferson.
Joann plans to build an 800,000-square-foot distribution center that will employ 175 people. Joann says it needs the center to meet customer demand in the Midwest for its stores and online sales.
Separately, Florida-based Kalera received approval for tax incentives for its plans to build a "vertical farm" in Columbus, part of the company's effort to become one of the nation's largest operators of indoor, year-round farms. Kalera grows and sells produce using hydroponic farming technology, which uses less space.
The Orlando-based company is building the farm at 1302 London-Groveport Road near Rickenbacker International Airport. The 75,000-square-foot facility is expected grow greens for restaurants, groceries, airports and institutions. The company plans 65 local jobs.
