As unmanned technology and network scale dramatically bring down costs, drones could account for one-third of same-day package deliveries by 2040. While security and privacy concerns still hamper England’s drone market’s, a mounting body of evidence suggests the technology will be worth billions to the national economy in the near-future.
Recent research suggests that by 2030 the skies above Britain will be a very different place. It is estimated that by that time, there will be a highly coordinated hive of more than 76,000 sophisticated drones performing all manner of tasks. The commerce this supports could provide a £21 billion boost to the UK’s GDP.
According to a new report by L.E.K. Consulting, by 2040, the rapid expansion of the drone market may account for a large part of the parcel delivery market. The exact market share will depend on how the transport operator configures its network and the comparable cost of transporting goods by road. Based on this method, by the end of the next decade, drones will account for more than 30% of parcel deliveries that day.
L.E.K. did concede that drones are unlikely to replace traditional trucking, however as supply chains look to transform their operations following the Covid disruption, they will add to existing logistics systems to avoid congestion.
