After Turkey in 2018, the 31th International Congress of Horticultural Sciences will be held in Angers, France, from August 14th to 22nd, 2022. Every four years, for a week, nearly 3,000 participants from 70 countries come together to discuss issues in the plant sector. This year, the conference will take place face-to-face and remotely.
CIRAD, by co-organizing the event with AgroCampusOuest, INRAE, the University of Angers, Végépolys Valley and the city of Angers, hopes with this edition to reinforce the presence of tropical and Mediterranean countries. “We are going to do everything we can to increase the representation of southern countries and related research themes during the congress. It is essential to bring together all contexts and viewpoints,” explains Rémi Kahane, CIRAD researcher and international vice-president for the organization of the congress. “In the north, one of the horticultural priorities is to produce while respecting the environment, by promoting sanitation, water or air. In the south, it is above all a question of producing for food, nutrition and income.”

CIRAD activity related to horticulture in tropical environments
- Management of genetic resources (for example, enhancing the banana in the Caribbean or the vanilla on the Reunion). CIRAD manages the largest collection of vanilla plantations in the world.
- Urban and peri-urban horticulture on specific food system issues in urbanization conditions or on nutritional, sanitary, environmental and economic issues (jobs, income) within small production structures.
- Agroecological approach in terms of protection of the crops (the use of insect nets to protect vegetable productions of small producers in tropical regions or the use of service plants to control weed growth in fruit orchards.
