A Glenview family-owned farm will be featured on The History Channel this weekend as a representative of the “future of food.”
Longtime resident Aviad Sheinfeld started Wiseacre Farm, 1975 N. Lake Terrace, in late 2019. His work will be featured in an episode of “Modern Marvels” at 9 p.m. Sunday on The History Channel, but it will also be available to view with a cable login on The History Channel website after Sunday.
“We have dedicated the last couple of years to growing the freshest, cleanest greens in our community and for our community, and it’s truly gratifying to be recognized for that,” Aviad Sheinfeld said about being featured.
Aviad, the “founding farmer,” as his daughter called him, grew up in Israel until he was 8, and he used to spend a lot of time on his grandparents’ farm. After coming to the United States, he pursued a career in computer science, but his early love of agriculture and farming stayed with him. “It is amazing to farm indoors, to understand how technology improves the farmer’s work environment, but most importantly how technology enhances productivity and sustainability and allows us to serve the local community with superb produce,” he said.
The farm started shortly before the pandemic, and, like many others, Yael Sheinfeld and her family had to quickly make some adjustments. Their original intent was to serve restaurants, growing specific crops that chefs might not have access to in a normal grocery store, she said. Instead they pivoted to offer home delivery and farm-side pickup, as well as donating produce to local food pantries.
The family got connected to The History Channel through Freight Farms, a manufacturer of container farming technology, which sent Wiseacre the repurposed shipping containers they initially used to get started in 2019.
