Sustenir Agriculture's indoor vertical farm in partnership with Dairy Farm International (DFI) is expected to produce up to 25 tonnes of leafy greens annually.
Located in DFI's Kajang distribution center, the 7,500 sq foot space grows two types of superfoods - Kinky Kale and Toscano Kale. Both are known as rich sources of vitamins which are essential for building a strong immune system, sustaining energy levels, and preventing common health issues.
Kale is known for being a traditionally tough and bitter leafy vegetable. However, Sustenir's high-tech agri-farming methods using Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) has allowed it to tailor the taste of kale, growing it crunchier and sweeter for Asian palates. This is timely, as according to research conducted by Food Industry Asia, Malaysians are increasingly shifting preferences to taste and health in the wake of the pandemic. In fact, more locals are seeking out products that boost immunity and wellness for comfort and indulgence, without compromising on flavor.
Dairy Farm Group, fresh commercial director South East Asia, Ruth McLennan says the entry of Sustenir into Malaysia is welcomed not only by customers who are now looking for clean, highly nutritious local produce, but also echoes calls by local leaders and academics.
"The government and various experts have called for greater implementation of smart farming methods and other innovative technologies to increase productivity, in order to improve food security." Sustenir's Kinky Kale and Toscano Kale were both specially developed to address reluctance to eat this superfood, due to its reputation for being bitter, tough and fibrous.
Sustenir's kale is grown to be juicier, sweeter and crispier, tailored to suit Asian taste buds, to encourage healthier eating habits.
