Home Growers South Africa:

“From home growers to schools, charities and corporations, our products are open to anyone”

“Vertical farming is only one aspect of what we do; we cover a wide variety of sustainable growing and focus on edible plants. Many others focus either on cannabis or ornamental plants in garden centers, but we decided to focus on the sustainable and organic growing segment,” says Cassian Davis, owner of Home Growers South Africa.

Home Growers South Africa provides 100+ products for home growing, including grow bags and barrels, mushroom grow kits, worm farms, vertical farming equipment, hydroponic systems, tools, and accessories, etc. The company manufactures many of its products in South Africa, ensuring that home growers always have access to growing materials.

The hydroponic setup

Space- and resource-efficient growing system
One of Home Growers SA’s main products is the Grow Barrel, which provides home growers with a multidimensional growing system, whereas wall farms are one-dimensional. As a round system, the Grow Barrel maximizes light use efficiency and allows growers to produce roughly 60 plants in its 42 pockets and open top.

As Cassian explains, the Grow Barrel provides an effective method of producing lots of fruits and vegetables on a small footprint as one barrel requires less than one square meter of space. The Grow Barrel is a fully sustainable system with a worm farm at the center of the barrel, which produces worm casting and a vermicompost solution that provides nutrients to the plants.

Another comparable product group is the vertical grow bags, which have four, eight, or twelve pockets and can be cable-tied to a fence, gate, or wall.

Reaching a wide range of growers
As Cassian explains, Home Growers South Africa’s client base is very diverse and includes home growers, schools, charities, and corporations. While some of these clients tackle hydroponics, some prefer soil-based farming methods. Either way, the company offers a range of hydroponic and soil-based systems to meet the customers’ preferences and available infrastructure.

“In South Africa, you have massive areas of townships where they have little infrastructure, including electricity and water. That’s why we really hope to give South Africans the opportunities to grow food in these limited environments. There is a passion and desire to grow.
