How OSRAM wants to ensure higher yields

"We want to bring exactly the light that is needed – where it is needed"

"Every plant is different – and so is every farm," says Rauno Pokall, senior product manager with OSRAM. That's why the company not only offers standard solutions but also provides customers with exactly the light they need, in the form of customized systems. "We want to bring exactly the light that is needed – where it is needed."

System matched to the needs of the plants
"Whether you need powerful LED components for overhead cultivation or are looking for expertise in vertical farming or intermediate lighting (interlighting), it is important that your system solutions are optimally matched to the needs of the plants, enabling predictable and continuous growth," says Rauno.

For example, when it comes to greenhouses, you want to work with LED lighting components that are as efficient as they are effective, for LED modules as well as LED power supplies. "High light output and the right light spectrum are crucial." With this in mind, OSRAM developed new Optotronic Fit HC LED drivers with power clusters from 400W to 1,000W. These outputs are combined with Light Engine Modules for standard and customization approach. "With our easily customizable modules, you can choose from a wide range of spectral distributions and lighting concepts to meet your needs for your plant in its specific growth phase," says Rauno.

But there's more. OSRAM offers the matching LED module and LED driver as a “system of systems” for interlighting solutions. "It allows growers to achieve further optimized lighting conditions. The interlighting is installed closer to the plant, avoiding shadows and gaps in illumination and providing the plant with ideal growth stimulation."

Vertical Farms
Where there is little space for large greenhouses, vertical farms have sprung up in recent years. They provide fresh, locally grown herbs and vegetables for more and more city dwellers. According to Rauno, the PrevaLED BRICK LED modules with high-power or mid-power LED technology are ideal for creating the right compromise between homogeneity and efficiency in such farms.

He explains how the company creates these innovations based on their more than 100 years of experience in light spectra and light source design, combined with their access to leading technology in horticultural chip development, allowing them to deliver the right components for any lighting project. "We co-develop modules, drivers and control systems to create the most suitable lighting product. Custom-made solutions – whether drivers or boards perfectly tailored to your needs – are a great advantage for your project."

In an online training, the team with OSRAM will share more information about their multiple solutions for different horticulture application fields, like vertical farms or hydroponic greenhouses.

The online training will be held on 28. Oct. 2021, 09:00 AM CET.
