Farmitank:

Bringing multi-level, silo-style indoor farming to Spain

“Farmitank’s silo design, equipped with plug-and-play technology, allows modularity and flexibility. It makes it a very attractive turnkey product,” says Esther Verdú, Director of Agricultural Operations at Foodiverse, a Spanish multinational company, expert in the production of fresh and healthy food.

Farmitank is a fully climate-controlled hydroponic farm that integrates advanced technology and innovative design, with crops grown inside an isothermal, modular, and cylindrical stainless steel tank that occupies 40 square meters and ranges from 6 to 18 meters tall.

The Farmitank design includes the tank (i.e., the building that will house the growing system) and all necessary growing equipment and other materials. One of Farmitank’s prominent features is its elevator system that acts as a working platform from which growers can conduct various tasks at each level of the crop. Once completed, growers can then move the elevator up or down to access other levels.

“Farmitank can reach up to 40 growing levels thanks to its maximum height of 18 meters. Also, its detachable and portable design allows it to be installed anywhere; adjacent to production and processing plants, logistics centers, or even retailers,” explains Esther.

To further resource efficiency, Farmitank integrates numerous forms of automation for seeding, transplanting, and pruning. The company motto? “We bring the automation to the crop.”

Selling lettuces from pilot facility, looking to commercialize systems.
Farmitank-grown products are currently sold at five Spanish retailers, with a sales growth of more than 100% from 2019 to 2020. The pilot facility produces green and red oakleaf lettuces, salatrio, salanova, and trocadero lettuces.

The company is currently looking into scaling up its system and installing similar systems in new locations, particularly those with extreme climates and limited resources.
