Cantábrica Agricultura Urbana is a start-up founded in 2021 by Teresa Portillo and Javier Espina, biologists specializing in Plant Biology.
The idea arose in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. They saw a business opportunity in bringing to the city fresh, safe products with high nutritional value thanks to hydroponics techniques that they had already studied. With their training, they were able to deepen in a more specialized way and take care of the crop in the greatest detail.
In the short term, Cantábrica intends to extend its portfolio to hotels and restaurants in Asturias, offering the added value of a nutritious, local product with the lowest possible environmental impact.
Apart from this, Cantabrian also wants to offer training workshops to extend this type of farming technique to future generations or current generations who want to enter the world of vertical farming or CEA.
Virex Technologies has supported these young entrepreneurs right from the beginning, doing lighting studies with Valoya L-series LED tubes. The spectra used are AP673L and NS12.
This is a brand that the team recommends for this type of cultivation technique due to its specialized spectra for different objectives that are proposed. There are crops that need light to generate biomass (green leafy plants) and other crops need a fast, strong and compact growth, providing a hormetic effect (hormesis) to stimulate secondary metabolites. This will cause the nutritional values to increase exponentially, producing a flavor more intense, a different texture and morphology.
