Carribeans: Parliament representative to introduce hydroponics farming

Melissa Skerrit- Parliament Representative from Roseau Central constituency, has announced to provide equipment to people for hydroponics farming. She said that doing soil farming is a little difficult in the city due to the scarcity of farmland.

She announced the development on Wednesday through a Facebook page, adding that people can now grow vegetables, fruits, leafy greens and also flowers just by using the nutrient-rich water.

Melissa Skerrit, who is also the wife of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, added that hydroponics farming comes with several benefits, such as an increased production rate 3 to 10 times in the same amount of space; production is twice as fast in a well-managed hydroponic system and up to 90% more efficient use of water.

Furthermore, she also shared infographics on hydroponics farming and stated that city farming could lead to more sustainable living. The people of Dominica are excited that the government is utilizing new methods to promote the agriculture sector. Many replied to Melissa Skerrit’s post, showing support for the upcoming project.

A user named Neon Charles wrote, “I’m pleased to see that our Government is embracing agriculture and modern agriculture.”
