Saarbrücken start-up Hexafarms has dedicated itself to a future market: software support for vertical farming. "From seedling to a ready-to-sell product in 20 days, that's significantly faster than conventional farming. What's more, the global market for such products is estimated to be worth around 6 billion euros by 2022," the three founders told Saarbrückener Zeitung.
"We are a software company and do not see ourselves as cultivators; we are know-how providers. We can control the oil content in peppermint, for example, or the iron content in kale. We don't do genetic modification, and we only use fertilizer as often as the plant needs it," they added.
