A Beggs man is creating a new sustainable food program in Green Country. He’s using aquaponics and wants more people to get involved in it with a new project called the “Aquaponics Oasis Project.”
Bob Rider is growing vegetables in his greenhouse, but they aren’t growing in dirt. That’s because he’s using aquaponics. Rider said he’s been doing aquaponics for around 15 years, but now he wants to create a community of aquaponics farmers.
“We’ll have a hub, a central point that will monitor little farms around it in the community, and it’s a way to get good sustainable organic food to our communities,” said Rider. He wants up to 90 people to join the new program to grow and share the food in a cooperative.
Rider said it can help at a time of increased food costs, high inflation, and supply chain problems. “The expenses and the trucking and all that industry things going overseas and containers being held up and all getting product in...the shelves, it doesn’t take a genius to see we’ve got a problem, and if we’re going to eat, we better think about what we’re going to do, and this is definitely by far so far out there the best solution,” he said.
