Austrian food retail chain Spar now offers 'vertically farmed' lettuce in its product range. 'Vertical farming' refers to a special form of agriculture in urban areas, in which plant and animal products are produced in mostly multi-story buildings. The plants grow on plastic nets and are supplied with water and nutrients by a computer-controlled circulation system. Aside from this, 24-hour LED lighting and climate control create optimal growing conditions.
Here, food market leader Spar is cooperating with the Italian vertical farming company Planet Farms, which is now delivering two ready-to-eat salad mixes to 120 of the retail chain's stores. The manufacturer emphasizes that the automated supply chain does not require any further washing of the produce. Overall, Spar says, "the consumer will be the first person to ever touch the product."
