US (OH): Urban agriculture looks to new foundations in Toledo

A group of crop agitators led by state Sen. Paula Hicks-Hudson gathered Friday at Grace Community Center in Toledo to discuss urban food production.

The tables of extension agents, teachers, and urban food producers exchanged ideas on how to reclaim concrete and more economically churn Toledo soils.

“We are looking at a way to reuse the land in our city,” said Ms. Hicks-Hudson (D., Toledo), who is working on drafting a bill that would provide a foundation and a legal definition for a trending farming effort. “We are looking at an opportunity to create something that my colleagues in Columbus say cannot work.”

She was talking to a room full of believers. The group of nearly 25 would like to see the region return to its history as a leading producer of fresh produce.
