Photo report: NovelFarm 2023

Although it elicits lots of attention, soilless production (hydroponic, aeroponic, vertical farming) is yet to obtain that widespread trust that will enable it to step up. The NovelFarm fair (Pordenone, Italy, February 15-16, 2023) is proof of this, as the number of visitors actually decreased compared with 2023 (maybe because it was too close to Fruit Logistica). The flow of visitors and interest were nonetheless high.

"Indoor farming is the combination and production techniques and technologies that can better guarantee high-quality sustenance and quantities suitable for a constantly-growing world population. Soilless techniques help save water and fertilizers, eliminate the need for crop protection products, and, most of all, free up the soil leaving the environment and biodiversity intact," said the organizers.

This year's edition updated guests on technologies and solutions, mainly genetics and varietal selections for vertical farming. De novo domestication is the new trend for the development of new varieties and species, together with rewilding. Both techniques are at the basis of the future of this segment, though not everyone agrees and instead focuses on modern technology.
