Thanks to modern technology and residual heat, northern Sweden will soon be able to harvest large quantities of fresh cucumbers year-round. An agreement between Agtira and Greenfood worth SEK 285 million has been signed for a cucumber cultivation plant in Boden. The facility will be one of a total of ten around the country.
"The cucumbers can be sold immediately after being picked. These are produced sustainably with minimal water consumption, says Ted Stenshed, CEO of the Greenfood Fresh Produce business area.
Thus, the choice fell on Boden
That the choice falls on Boden is justified, among other things, by the municipality's well-developed infrastructure and strategic position in Norrbotten. For Agtira, it will be the company's northernmost outpost to date, as their previous facilities are in Sundsvall and Skellefteå.
"The potential to recover residual heat from data centers and other industries is a huge and often unused resource," says Pontus Lamberg, operations manager at Agtira.
"It is an important issue for the future to increase our degree of self-sufficiency both in Norrbotten and in the whole of Sweden. Therefore, even more food must be produced locally," says Claes Nordmark, municipal councilor.
