"Plant-based, tamper evident packaging is the freshest thing yet"

"As a grower looking for a packaging assortment that will keep their greens safe, fresh, protected, and away from chemicals of concern, we've got the plant-based solution for them," says Paul Antoniadis, CEO of good natured®, a North American supplier of plant-based products, developing environmentally responsible packaging solutions for food packaging.

good natured has recently expanded its line of plant-based packaging to include GoodGuard™, the company's patent-pending, dual-hinged packaging that comes equipped with a tamper-evident locking tab. Say goodbye to traditional tamper-evident packaging with tear-away strips that create unnecessary microplastics. GoodGuard has 'changed the game' by providing an eco-friendly solution that ensures product security minus the tear-away strip.

"We are proud to supply a highly competitive packaging offering that is not only a sustainable alternative to those made from fossil fuels but functions at an optimal level compared to other packaging options on the market. Customers don't need to sacrifice functionality for a sustainable option," says Paul Antoniadis.

Growing Up
GoodGuard is a good fit for the vertical farming industry due to its alignment with the industry's sustainability values, particularly as they pertain to reducing the environmental footprint of food production.

GoodGuard is also well adapted to the various marketing avenues of vertical farming, whether it is sold on supermarket shelves or delivered by bicycle. The packaging's tamper-evident, high durability, stackability, crush resistance, and space-efficient design helps keep the products fresh and protected from farm to table. The nesting bases and lids are designed to stack easily without sacrificing space and clarity, while the scalloped walls provide increased protection against crushing.

Cost-wise, good natured is proud to say that its product and packaging programs are cost-competitive to traditional petroleum-based plastics and sometimes less expensive than post-consumer recycled petroleum-based (PCR) options. This is due to the company's approach to combining the best materials, optimized designs, and North American distribution networks. Altogether, this means that good natured is eliminating the barriers to switch to environmentally friendly packaging by making it both easy and affordable.

Their biobased recyclable or compostable products meet retailer sustainability goals and align with the recent White House goal of replacing 90% of petroleum-based plastics with biobased alternatives by 2023.

Safeguarding food and the environment
GoodGuard is available in two material options: BPI-certified compostable1 PLA and curbside recyclable Bio-PET. The company's PLA (polylactic acid) is made from 99% annually renewable resources, while the Bio-PET material is made up of up to 30% plant-based materials and up to 50% recycled content. Neither the PLA nor Bio-PET options contain any chemicals of concern, according to California's "Prop 65" and the United States' "Safer States" alliance, both of which list materials that are potentially hazardous to the environment and human health.

To ensure GoodGuard's competitiveness in terms of quality, good natured conducts freezer and drop tests, as well as crush resistance and stackability tests. These tests indicate that GoodGuard's PLA performs as well as, if not better, than many petroleum-based counterparts, while Bio-PET material formulation can be co-mingled in the recycling stream with traditional petroleum-based PET but without the chemicals of concern.

good natured offers a range of plant-based packaging that is suitable for leafy greens, microgreens, herbs, as well as fruits and vegetables. The GoodGuard collection is available for purchase directly from goodnaturedproducts.com
