NL: Hippotainer is growing lettuce on five layers

At the Manege Zonder Drempels, there has been a large sea container for a while now, which has a very special function: it is a 'vertical farm'.' The company, TGS from Wageningen, has developed the 'Hippotainer' and is now testing it on the grounds of the Manege.

"The company came to ask if they could test this with us, and we were happy to cooperate," says Esther Lucassen, manager of the riding school. Jort Maarseveen, project manager of the Hippotainer: "The lettuce is grown vertically on five horizontal layers floating on water, which contains all nutrients and is circulated."

The lettuce was for the riding school, but given the large amount, the Food Bank was knocked on the door. "A special collaboration, which we are very happy with," says Patrick Zomers of the Food Bank.
