Breakthrough in indoor production of specialty golden ear mushrooms

Golden ear mushrooms are a specialty product with a very particular appearance. The mushroom is large, bright yellow on the outside, and its appearance is marked by wrinkled, folded lobes.

Recently, Shandong Kangrui Edible Mushroom Technology from Dezhou City, Shandong, has invested in the opening of a new Golden Ear Mushroom production facility.

The expectation is that demand and international demand for specialty mushrooms will continue to grow.

"Judging from these three batches, the quantity and quality of the mushrooms are very stable. This shows that the company's golden ears have been successfully planted and grown indoors, which is a breakthrough, can be mass-produced," says the company's general manager Zhang Hanbing.

The smart mushroom facility invested in a new space of 37.8 square meters with a height of 3.2 meters. It can hold 3,360 fungus sticks in one batch and can produce about 1.2 tons of golden ears, with an average of 31.7 kilograms of golden ears per square meter. The crop can be produced year-round.

Golden ear mushrooms are native to Yunnan. It is a rare edible fungus, also known as "the bird's nest in the fungus."

Traditional golden ear cultivation not only has low yield but also has uneven quality.

The technical requirements for factory production of golden ears are relatively high. Previously, only some enterprises in Yunnan had mastered the technology. Since 2021, Kangrui Edible Mushroom Company has established a research and development team and has established stable cooperative relations with the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and other institutions to tackle the industrialized production of golden ear technology.

It is understood that in all production links, strain cultivation is the most basic and important step. During the research and development process, after overcoming key technologies such as culture medium and cultivation methods, the company finally bred strains with high purity and strong vitality. On this basis, the use of sporocarp tissue separation and regeneration culture retains high-vigor strains and greatly improves the success rate of strain breeding.

Zhang Hanbing continues: "Mushrooms have high requirements for environmental cleanliness, temperature and humidity, and light. To this end, Kangrui Company has developed a mobile smart mushroom house, which is equipped with temperature and humidity control, air purification equipment, and an intelligent control system. The smart mushroom house has set up the best production environment for golden ear mushrooms. Through data collection and automatic monitoring, the temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide content in the mushroom house can be adjusted, and remote control can be realized through mobile phones and computers."

After the golden ears enter the smart mushroom house, mushrooms can be produced in about 27 days, and the mushroom production per unit area is high. Golden ear mushrooms have a stable high-end consumer market.
