Spanish vertical farm eyes expansion after successful start

“We are planning to expand the company by opening new vertical farms, adding new products, and entering various organic supermarket chains in the area. Additionally, it’s a dream to cross borders and open new Farmbrots facilities in other countries, and potentially continents,” says Oscar Valls, Co-founder and CEO of Farmbrots, a Spanish vertical farming startup based in the center of Barcelona.

Dedicated to locally growing and supplying various microgreens, the company has big plans for the upcoming year. "At this point, we’re waiting to close various investment rounds that are scheduled for 2024, which will boost our expansion plans."

Growing inside a 600m2 vertical farm, the team recently started constructing a mushroom cultivation cell. to broaden their product basket.

The new cell will allow the team to broaden the product offering, on top of its 14 microgreens which are Pea Nasturtium, Pink Radish, Green Mustard, Daikon Radish, Mizuna, Songo Radish, Green Shiso, Cilantro, Red Shiso, Sun Flower, Beetroot, Basil, Amaranth, and Purple Basil.

"Our main goal in 2024 is to expand our market with a greater diversification of products. Additionally, we believe that by diversifying our products, we can expand our company's values, which are: Ecological sustainability, the nutritional value of the product, and local production. Also, it's worth noting that Óscar founded this company with a social purpose to enhance both society and the ecosystem," Oscar affirms.

Diversifying the business case, Farmbrots supplies to B2B, such as restaurants and cocktail bars. As well as households, via its home delivery plans starting from 55 euros per month. Such a program consists of a weekly box with various microgreens.

Firstly, the a lack of space within an urban area like Barcelona. Farmbrots identified a need in the local agriculture market, and what better proximity than having a farm right beneath your home? The Spanish startup aims to provide a product that is local, healthy, nutritious, and ecological.

From water consumption to product packaging, Farmbrots strives to be entirely sustainable and ecological. Aiming to provide an eco-friendly product, the production adheres strictly to sustainability standards, which can be traced back to recyclable PET trays for its sprout, e.g.

Yet, the winning aspect of its products for the Farmbrots team is that they are nutrient-dense, containing 40% more nutrients than conventionally developed products. In addition to their enhanced nutritional content, their small size provides convenience for consumption and improved digestibility.
