US (IA): High schooler designs and installs microgreen system for conference center

When Wahlert Catholic High School senior Grace Schroeder learned earlier this year that she would be responsible for pitching a sustainable agriculture project to a local business, she was initially a bit nervous.

But on Tuesday, as Grace gazed at the trays of microgreen plants she and her classmates helped to grow for Grand River Center in Dubuque, she was proud of what the group had accomplished. "You don't have to be an adult that has your own establishment to work with a business," Grace said.

Grace is one of four Wahlert students in teacher Korrin Schriver's environmental science class who recently worked with Grand River Center to design and build a hydroponic system for growing microgreens in the center's kitchen. The system, which Grand River Center staff plan to maintain and expand, is designed to provide the event center with a sustainable, on-site food source to supplement its menus.

"(I learned) that sustainability and business don't have to be opposites," Grace said. "They can work together."
