US (OH): Lakewood City Schools receives agriculture-related state grant

Part of going green is learning about sustainability. Add in career opportunity, and that's what Harrison Elementary School students will be experiencing this year. The Quail Street school was recently awarded a $13,465 Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Grow Ohio Grant.

The funds allow for the implementation of a comprehensive program to educate students about agriculture and food-related career opportunities, as well as give them an opportunity to grow their own food at school.

"One of the things that's important for us is just continuing to grow global citizens and really trying to protect the planet and utilize local resources," Lakewood City Schools AssistantSuperintendent Christine Palumbo said. "A component of that is just recognizing the opportunity to grow your own food or support local farms."

The state grant allows the Harrison community to engage with several local food producer organizations throughout the year.
