US: Growing from hobby to fully fledged business

What began with a little mushroom growing kit — a new pastime for Garza and his girlfriend, Lesly Magallan — escalated quickly when the couple saw mushroom mass production equipment for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Now, Garza and Magallan are cultivating a mushroom farm inside a slender Frederick County warehouse where colorful varieties of mushrooms sprout.

"We stumbled into it and now we really enjoy it," Garza said. "We both still work full-time, so this is a hobby that kind of grew out of proportion."

Sol Mountain Mushrooms, co-owned by the two 26-year-old Texas natives, currently offers 11 different types of mushrooms — some for cooking and others medicinal. Garza and Magallan, who have known each other since high school, founded the business in May. Seven months later, their fresh, dried, powdered and blended mushrooms are available at local farm markets and their online storefront.

Before they became mushroom farmers, the pair visited a few local farm markets to see if a mushroom vendor was needed in the region. They said each market they checked with needed a mushroom supplier.
