India: Growing saffron hydroponically for a profit

A woman from Odisha has achieved remarkable success by cultivating saffron at home, earning an impressive ₹10 lakh per kilogram.

Sujata Agarwal has transformed a modest 100-square-foot room in Jharsuguda, Odisha, into a thriving saffron business. Launched in 2022, her venture challenges traditional farming methods by successfully growing this precious spice through aeroponic techniques, achieving remarkable yields and profitability.

"So far, I've trained 62 students in hydroponics, microgreens, and saffron farming. Some have already started their own businesses and are doing well. My goal is to create employment opportunities for the younger generation. Many young people, including farmers' children, wish to work in modern environments while staying connected to agriculture. Hydroponics offers this opportunity – they can dress formally, work in air-conditioned spaces, and take farming to new heights."

A postgraduate in Home Science, Sujata first got the idea for this business while scrolling on her phone and coming across the concept of hydroponic farming.
