Tesco Ireland announced a groundbreaking partnership with An Post as the new logistics provider for its Stronger Starts Food programme. This innovative collaboration sees An Post deliver thousands of Tesco Stronger Starts Food packs to 240 DEIS primary schools nationwide every week. The free packs, received by thousands of children, contain a nutritious mix of seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables including apples, onions, potatoes, and carrots.

Sweden: ICA Gruppen's report for the fourth quarter of 2024
ICA Gruppen reported: "Consolidated net sales increased 6.8% in the fourth quarter to SEK 40,879mln (38,273). Operating profit excluding items affecting comparability and IFRS 16 was SEK 1,405mln (1,327), corresponding to an operating margin of 3.4% (3.5). ICA Sweden performed well with increased volumes driven by a higher number of customer visits and increased market shares for the ICA stores".

UK: Aldi seeking staff for new stores
Aldi is expecting to create 1,600 new store roles across the UK this year as part of its £650mln investment programme. The discounter currently has more than 1,050 stores, with it targeting around 30 openings in total during 2025 - a similar number to last year.

In 2021, Sainsbury's Holborn Circus Local location underwent a refurbishment to become a SmartShop Pick & Go mobile first and check-out free store, powered by Amazon's Just Walk Out technology. A Sainsbury's spokesperson told RTIH: "SmartShop Pick & Go is no longer available in our Holborn Circus store. We continue to work with AWS across a range of projects and we are looking at how we can use technology to make shopping with us even simpler and more convenient in the future".

PepsiCo earnings beat estimates, but demand for drinks and snacks drops in North America
PepsiCo reported mixed quarterly results as demand for its snacks and drinks fell in North America for the fifth straight quarter. Pepsi posted fourth-quarter net income attributable to the company of $1.52bln, or $1.11 per share, up from $1.3bln, or 94 cents per share, a year earlier. Net sales dropped slightly to $27.78bln.

US: UNFI reaches agreement with 160 unionized truck drivers
More than 160 United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) truck drivers in Arizona, California, Oregon, and Utah ratified a new five-year collective bargaining agreement, the union announced. The contract secures better wages, pension contributions, healthcare, seniority protections, and holiday pay, according to Teamsters Local 150. The Teamsters represent more than 5,000 UNFI workers nationwide. Since 2022, nearly 2,500 Teamsters have joined the union.

US: Walmart's latest acquisition is a shopping mall in Pennsylvania
Walmart has bought a mall in the Pittsburgh area. The purchase was an all-cash $34mln deal, according to CBL, a shopping mall owner that sold the property. In a statement, Walmart said it "is very interested in being part of any future redevelopment of this site". It declined to share specific plans for the future of the mall.
