Nigeria: Boosting food security through soilless growing

AMEDI's Soilless Farming initiative was a challenge presented to the institute's management when the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, visited AMEDI on January 16, 2024, for an on-the-spot assessment of ongoing activities. The visit aligned with the newly crafted NASENI Strategic Launchpad, themed "Infinite Possibilities: Economic Transformation through Advancement in Technology Transfer and Adaptations."

This new approach encourages each NASENI institute to engage with and leverage its host state's comparative advantages through the Agency's principles of Collaboration, Creation, and Commercialization (3Cs).

Since then, AMEDI has made significant strides, constructing 12 greenhouses as of April 2024. These greenhouses support climate-defying, soilless agricultural practices for growing vegetables such as bell peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, spring onions, carrots, and habanero peppers.

Naseni AMEDI's soilless farming employs various innovative methods, including Mapal Troughs for cultivating bell peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers; Grow Bags for bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and spring onions; Dutch Buckets for tomatoes; Vertical Grow Pots for lettuce; Pineapple Towers; and A-frames for lettuce and spring onions.
