US: Pennsylvania legislators present bill to protect mushroom farmers to house

While spotlights shine on issues such as the federal budget, legislators from Pa. have presented a more niche bill to the House and Senate.

On Feb. 26, Senators John Fetterman and Dave McCormick reintroduced the Protecting Mushroom Farmers Act to the Senate. At the same time, Reps. Chrissy Houlahan and Dan Meuser presented a companion bill to the House of Representatives.

"Pennsylvania is the mushroom capital of the world, and our mushroom farmers deserve access to the same insurance as so many other producers — that's just common sense," said Senator Fetterman. "I'm grateful that Congressman Thompson and Senator Stabenow included this bill in their proposals for the Farm Bill last year. Now, it's time to finally pass this legislation and give Pennsylvania farmers the coverage they need."

If passed, the bill would require the USDA to conduct a study about offering federally-backed crop insurance specifically for mushroom farms, which face their own unique challenges.
