In partnership with The Growcer, a Canadian agritech company specializing in year-round modular farms, a hydroponic farm will be deployed at Prairie River Junior High School. This innovative, climate-controlled system will allow students to grow food in all seasons, ensuring a consistent supply of fresh, nutritious produce for the community. In addition to gaining valuable knowledge about food security and agricultural technology, students will develop critical skills in teamwork, responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
Students from E.W. Pratt High, Prairie River Junior High, and Prairie View Outreach School will be actively involved in managing the farm, growing produce like lettuce, peppers, and strawberries. From seed to harvest, they will learn about efficient water use, plant nutrition, and sustainable food production practices. The goal is to supply fresh produce to local schools and, as the program develops, potentially expand to surrounding communities.
This project was approved at the December 17 Board Meeting and is spearheaded by Brennan McDonald, Coordinator of Planning and Special Projects, who has worked diligently to secure funding. The Buchanan Family Foundation gave a $315,000 donation, which has made this initiative possible.
Launch Timeline: The project is set to begin in the next school year, with the first harvest expected in October 2025.
