A new effort is bringing the farm-to-table movement to students in Sanibel. Volunteers are teaming up with students and staff to spread a new idea at the Sanibel School.
It's a partnership between the School District of Lee County, Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation and Harry Chapin Food Bank. Plants grow in hydroponic towers and raised garden beds with trellises. The idea is to harvest what grows, inspect it, clean it and serve it in the school cafeteria.
The Sanctuary Golf Club Foundation's president, Lisa Schmidlin, said, "Our hope is that the children will learn how to plant a garden, care for a garden and sustain themselves."
The project is another initiative through the School District of Lee County's "Healthy Living Collaboration," which promotes healthy minds and bodies.
