The Bishop Walsh School in Cumberland Maryland has been cultivating young minds since the 60's. Last year, they started growing something entirely different - vegetables. Thanks to small grants and STEM focused staff and teachers, all the students at this K-12 school have had a hand in building, managing and sustaining an environment that houses over 30 fish, hundred of gallons of recycled water and pallets of leafy greens - all growing in trays of nutrient rich water - no soil in sight.
Growth comes with its challenges; leaks, floods and a harvest that feeds not only their student body, teachers and a local shelter but soon they will be supplying a local business winter vegetables.
