Kenya: Smart mushroom project launched to promote sustainable agriculture

The Smart Mushroom Project, an innovative initiative aimed at tackling food insecurity and reducing deforestation, has been launched at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

The project brings a new angle to sustainable mushroom farming by introducing cutting-edge technology equipped with cameras and sensors that automatically regulate conditions such as temperature, humidity, and lighting, enabling the entire system to be monitored and operated remotely via smartphone from anywhere in the world.

While also serving as a hub for research, training, and entrepreneurship, the facility has been engineered to empower local communities by minimizing farming space and maximizing yield production.

The official launch took place on April 25, 2025, marking a significant step in linking innovation, sustainability, and economic growth for smallholder farmers. Spearheaded by JHUB Africa, in collaboration with Mush& Co. and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under the Creative Technology Solution (CTS) program, the project aims to establish a scalable model for smart farming that addresses environmental and economic challenges.

Dr. Lawrence Nderu, founder of JHUB Africa, expressed his excitement about the project's potential to make a lasting impact on both local communities and the environment.

"The Smart Mushroom Project is a testament to the power of collaboration. By combining technology, research, and community-focused solutions, we are creating a sustainable future for smallholder farmers. This model of farming will promote growth and innovation that will inspire change across the region," said Dr. Nderu.

KOICA Country Director, Mr. Park Wankyu, described the potential of the initiative as transformative. He emphasized that the project is a practical, climate-smart solution that empowers smallholder farmers to generate income while safeguarding forests.

"This initiative is not only about farming, it's about creating sustainable livelihoods and promoting inclusive green growth," Mr. Park said.

JKUAT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, praised the project for turning academic research into tangible solutions. She highlighted the integration of biotechnology, IoT, and practical, hands-on training, positioning the Smart Mushroom Project as a vital tool in the fight against food insecurity and youth unemployment.

In a speech read on her behalf by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, Prof. Jackson Kwanza, she applauded the initiative noting that "this model farm is a launchpad for applied research".

She called upon the government and industry partners to support the commercialization of university-led innovations.

James Wanjohi, Director at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, lauded the Smart Mushroom Model Farm as an exemplary fusion of innovation and community need.

He reinforced the Ministry's commitment to revolutionizing Kenya's agricultural sector, aligning this project with national goals for climate resilience and economic empowerment. "Mushroom farming is a climate-smart alternative that not only creates income-generating opportunities but also alleviates pressure on our ecosystems," Wanjohi stated.

The Ministry also expressed strong support for collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector, aiming to expand similar projects across the country.

The Smart Mushroom Project's facility will serve as a dynamic learning hub, equipping farmers, students, and youth with valuable mushroom cultivation skills.

Through JKUAT's digital innovation center, JHUB Africa, the project integrates cutting-edge technology with agriculture, ensuring that participants gain hands-on experience and access to digital tools that will enhance their farming practices.

With a special focus on empowering women and young farmers, the initiative aligns with a broader mission to build climate resilience, strengthen food systems, and turn innovative ideas into real, lasting change.
