Canada: Guelph’s GoodLeaf meets growing demand for local produce

One Canadian company is working hard to grow microgreens and baby greens in Guelph to meet the growing demand. GoodLeaf Farms CEO Andy O'Brien said the need for locally grown food has never been greater. Although he's unsure if the upward trend in sales will continue, he said he does think as Canadians we need to be more self-sufficient.

"Canada has had a food security issue for a long time," he said. "We get 90 percent of our produce from Mexico or Arizona or California, and it takes a long time to get here."

He said problems arise with inconsistent supply and quality and at certain times of the year, we go without. That's why indoor growing is so important moving forward in our climate.

The vertical farming techniques at GoodLeaf have shown we can grow fast crops in an eco-friendly way, so they are accessible to our communities. O'Brien said the success of the Guelph farm led to two more being built to supply Canadians from coast-to-coast.
