Booker chief operating officer (COO) Jonny McQuarrie is taking over as Tesco's CEO of central Europe, succeeding Matt Simister who recently announced his departure from the supermarket. McQuarrie spent three years as COO of Booker, following retail director roles at Tesco convenience and One Stop Stores.

Holland: Retail turnover up by over 4% in April
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports that retail turnover was 4.2% higher in April 2025 than in April 2024. Turnover in shops selling food, beverages and tobacco was up by 2.5% in April, year on year. Sales volume was 2.4% lower. Turnover in supermarkets was up by 1.8%, and turnover in specialty shops was up by 7.7%.

Winter is all about citrus, says owner and buyer Josh Flamminio at Sydney's Galluzzo Fruiterers. "Navel oranges are in. They're from Mildura and they're getting sweeter". At $3 a kilo in supermarkets, they're closely followed by mandarins. Daisy, imperial and Premium Gem varieties are also at their peak. "A Premium Gem mandarin is a new one in our shop", says Flamminio. "They've got the perfect amount of tang, with a few seeds. They're a rounded, symmetrical mandarin".

The European Commission reported: "The Commission has fined Delivery Hero and Glovo, two major food delivery companies, a total of €329mln for participating in a cartel in the online food delivery sector. In particular, the two companies (i) agreed not to poach each other's employees; (ii) exchanged commercially sensitive information; and (iii) allocated geographic markets. The infringement covered the European Economic Area ('EEA') and lasted four years. Cartels like this reduce choice for consumers and business partners, reduce opportunities for employees and reduce incentives to compete and innovate".

Mercadona's economic impact in Spain in 2024
Mercadona reported: "The IVIE (Valencian Institute for Economic Research) estimates the tax revenue and economic impact of Mercadona in its annual study. In 2024, the activity of Mercadona and its assembly line contributed €33.35bln in revenue and created 743,700 jobs, equivalent to 2.10% of the Spanish GDP and 3.71% of total employment in Spain. The tax revenue contributed to the Public Authorities was €12.6bln".

German ecommerce to grow 4% in 2025
The German Retail Association (HDE) is increasing its forecast for ecommerce for this year. It predicts a 4% increase. The German ecommerce market is expected to reach a total value of 92.4bln euros in sales by the end of this year.

Tesco trials shorter opening hours in Express stores
Tesco is considering closing some of its stores an hour earlier after being hit with a £235mln increase in staff costs following changes to National Insurance contributions. The supermarket chain is thought to be trialling shorter opening hours at its Express convenience stores, closing at 10pm instead of 11pm. The retailer is understood to have fewer employees on shift when the stores are open, The Telegraph reported.

Uber delivery business head departs; insider Macdonald appointed COO
Uber Technologies said the head of its delivery business, Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, is leaving the company after nearly 13 years. Uber also announced it has named Andrew Macdonald as its chief operating officer, reinstating the role almost six years after it was eliminated in a leadership overhaul in 2019.
