CAN: $45K donation to help start new vertical growing project

A new vertical greenhouse project at Port Cares' Reach Out Centre will soon supply fresh produce year-round to local residents in need, as a result of a $45,500 donation from Jungbunzlauer Canada.

"It's getting harder and harder to put healthy food on the table for families across Canada," said Christine Clark Lafleur, Port Cares' chief executive officer. "Food bank usage is at an all-time high and the price of groceries keeps going up."

Clark-Lafleur said the idea to build the greenhouse came from a desire to reduce dependence on unpredictable fresh produce donations, and create a self-reliant food supply for the charity. The donation was officially presented to Port Cares this week by Jungbunzlauer Canada, enabling the charity to begin sourcing greenhouse equipment.

The greenhouse will be located either at the Reach Out Centre or at a nearby property, depending on the size of the structure selected. Jungbunzlauer has been a fixture on the Port Colborne industrial landscape since 2002, operating a large-scale fermentation facility that produces sustainable ingredients for use in food, beverages and personal care products.
