Ghanaian students develop smart aquaponics system

The Opoku Ware School in the Ashanti region has unveiled an innovative Smart Aquaponics System during the Energy Commission's Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge. The system, designed to grow plants while simultaneously raising fish, creates a symbiotic and eco-friendly farming environment.

It combines aquaculture and hydroponics, allowing waste from the fish to serve as organic nutrients for the plants, while the plants help purify the water for the fish. The school is among some eight senior high schools shortlisted from the southern part of the country to participate in this year's edition. This is the 6th edition of the competition.

This year's challenge brought together senior high schools from across the country to develop sustainable energy and environmentally friendly innovations aimed at addressing real-world problems.

The initiative forms part of the Energy Commission's efforts to promote renewable energy and climate-friendly solutions among young people.
