US (CT): Planning underway for new hydroponic facility

A Hartford hydroponics produce grower is planning to add a greenhouse to allow for year-round production, as it sells its crops locally at an on-site farm stand with the larger goal of becoming a national model for neighborhood food initiatives.

Levo International leases nearly two acres at 441 Homestead Ave., where today it has outdoor hydroponics pipes growing leafy greens and pepper and tomato plants using nutrient-enriched water rather than soil.

The greenhouse would require approvals from the Hartford Planning and Zoning and the Inland Wetlands commissions, with Glastonbury-based Talar Properties filing a letter of consent for the project on the lot it owns.

Levo International sees the planned greenhouse as part of a larger "destination engagement and education center" and helping "set the tone" for redevelopment along Homestead Avenue west of downtown Hartford, according to a document on file with the Hartford land commissions. The expanded facility would employ as many as 25 people, some of them part-time.
