Dutch-Indian collaboration in horticulture highlighted ahead of HortiConnect 2025

In the run-up to HortiConnect 2025 in Bengaluru, horticulture developments in India and the Netherlands' involvement were discussed by Ewout de With, Consul General for South India, and Abhinav Roy of Agriplast / HortiConnect 2025.

According to de With, agriculture and horticulture remain core sectors for the Netherlands despite limited surface area. "After the United States, we are the biggest agriculture exporter in the world. Despite horticulture covering only 1.5% of agricultural land, it contributes to 20% of production," he explained. He pointed to technology-driven solutions, including greenhouse cultivation, as central to this output.

De With outlined ongoing collaborations in India, particularly Dutch seed companies operating around Bengaluru. These companies focus on breeding fruit and vegetable varieties adapted to local conditions, with reduced water needs and higher resilience to pests and climate change. He also highlighted the Centers of Excellence, developed under an agreement between Prime Minister Rutte and Prime Minister Modi, where Dutch technology is tested and adapted to Indian growing conditions.

To further strengthen ties, the Netherlands India Seed Secretariat works on aligning regulations and facilitating cooperation between Dutch and Indian seed companies. Supported by Seed NL, the initiative serves as a platform to bring companies and authorities together.

At HortiConnect 2025, the Netherlands is the partner country. The Dutch pavilion will host eight companies and representatives of Indian subsidiaries of Dutch firms. The program also includes a national session where Dutch horticultural approaches will be presented.

"We are keen to see where we can support Indian growers, particularly in mid- and high-tech horticulture, with solutions that combine sustainable practices and business outcomes," de With said. He encouraged stakeholders to attend the exhibition and engage with Dutch representatives.

HortiConnect 2025 takes place in Bengaluru on 25–27 September 2025. The three-day expo, organised with the National Horticulture Board, South India Floriculture Association and Indian Greenhouse Manufacturer Association, carries the theme 'Connecting Indian Horticulture Globally'.
