The only "Green Laboratory – GreenLab" in Ukraine was opened at the Reysky Lyceum of Hryshkovetska territorial community in Zhytomyr region. The institution received 300 thousand UAH in a competition to implement the project, said the lyceum director Irina Komarova to "Suspilne".
"In private structures, in universities, such systems exist, but in schools we are currently the first and only ones. With the prize money we received in the competition, we purchased an installation that came from Portugal. We waited for it for 2 months. We also bought a 3D printer, which has become an indispensable assistant. We made stands for test tubes, pipette tips, pots. We also purchased microscopes. The laboratory combined physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. We not only grow plants, but also learn, study how everything happens," she said.
The laboratory manager, Oleksiy Bohdanets, explained that this system works automatically.
"Even when I am at home, I can activate the irrigation system by pressing a button on my phone. It is also possible to change the lighting. It works on a smart home system and allows you to monitor the plants around the clock. Plants without soil do not get sick, do not require pesticides, there is no weed growth, and there are no other pests that would hinder development. Currently, up to 240 plants can be grown simultaneously in an area of 4.2 m². For so many plants, much more soil and time would be needed for cultivation, as they grow faster under favorable conditions," said Oleksiy Bohdanets.
