CAN: Temporary workers in a "state of shock" following closure of mushroom facility

The sudden closure of a mushroom plant in Wellington, Ont., has left dozens of temporary foreign workers facing job loss, possible deportation and no access to benefits or employment insurance, despite helping put food on Canadians' tables and leaving their families behind to do it.

Highline Mushrooms announced in September that it will shutter its mushroom farm in Wellington, south of Belleville, where advocates estimate some 300 workers are employed. The vast majority came to Canada through the agricultural stream of the temporary foreign worker program. All employees are set to be terminated by Dec. 12. The company did not respond to several attempts by the Star to confirm the number of temporary foreign workers it employs.
