Singapore: New vertical growing facility completed

V-Plus Agritech Pte Ltd, in collaboration with Abuzz Landscape, has completed an urban farm. "It demonstrates how design, technology, and community engagement can work hand in hand. The project goes beyond conventional urban farming by combining aesthetics and functionality to create a space that supports education, wellbeing, and sustainability", the team says.

At the heart of the project is the transformation of an existing pond into an aquaponics system that merges landscaping with food production. The result is an engaging environment that produces fresh, hyper-local vegetables while maintaining ecological balance. To address shading from nearby buildings, the system has been supplemented with LED lighting to ensure consistent plant growth.

The surrounding area has been designed as an open and inviting hub for outdoor learning and community activities. The space supports STEM education, "long kang" fishing, and farm-to-table harvesting events, all aimed at building stronger community ties and nurturing an understanding of sustainable food systems.

Biodiversity enhancement was another key focus. The team introduced a mix of small and large fish species, crayfish, and terrapins throughout the streams, along with tropical plants that enrich the ecosystem and bring nature closer to the community.

To promote wellbeing, the project also includes new sheltered areas that provide comfortable spaces for teachers and students to rest, reflect, and connect. These areas are designed to foster mental and physical wellness, making the space not only productive but also restorative.

"The completed urban farm stands as a living example of how thoughtfully designed green infrastructure can feed the body, educate the mind, and strengthen the spirit of a school community."
