US (MA): Mushroom grower receives $13,000 grant to improve food access

The largest urban greenhouse in Massachusetts, located in Indian Orchard, was awarded a grant of over $13,000 to improve its greenhouse infrastructure for building out its mushroom facility. Wellspring Harvest Greenhouse in Springfield's Indian Orchard neighborhood was established in 2018 to provide freshly grown produce right to the doorstep of those facing food insecurity. They grow a variety of lettuce and herbs year-round in their hydroponic facility. The co-op organization has eight members who also provide education and training to the community.

In a news release from the Healey-Driscoll Administration, WellSpring Harvest was awarded a total of $13,763.44 to improve food access in Massachusetts. They are part of 12 grant recipients awarded funding as part of the Urban Agriculture Program.

The Urban Agriculture Program will provide resources to urban farms and community gardens to increase their production capacity, benefiting low-to-moderate income residents who often face challenges accessing fresh, affordable, nutritious food.

Senator Adam Gómez expressed support for the grant funding, particularly for organizations like Wellspring Harvest and Nordica St. Community Farm in Springfield, which unite communities and provide healthy food and nutritional education.
