US (MD): Gov. Moore tours Frederick County hydroponic facility

The founders of District Farms on Thursday took Gov. Wes Moore, and other local and state officials, through a guided tour of their leafy greens greenhouse farm — one of the largest of its kind in Maryland. Co-founders Ali and Ibrahim Sharifzadeh and Jason Stern walked the large group through its facility, explaining the operations and benefits of their hydroponic farming process, from seeding to harvest to packaging.

They showed the tour group, which also included County Executive Jessica Fitzwater, Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks and County Council Member Renee Knapp, around their five-acre farm, which distributes products to Wegmans, H-E-B and, starting this week, Costco.

Along the tour, Moore asked questions, tasted the greens and complimented the farm's operations.

"Touring the facility and learning how it operates was incredibly impressive, and it's exciting to see how District Farms is on its way to becoming one of the largest vegetable-growing facilities in the Mid-Atlantic," Moore said in an email statement. "With a goal of providing fresh, local, high-quality leafy greens across the region, District Farms shows how Maryland businesses are driving growth and innovation while creating jobs and strengthening our economy."
