A Maltese agritech company is drawing international attention with a patented circular farming system that combines food production, education and sustainability — all developed locally. Bio Aqua Garden (BAG) has developed what it calls an AquaSoilPonics system: a closed-loop farming method that grows BIO vegetables and fish together using recycled water, regenerated soil and renewable energy, without the use of chemical fertilisers or pesticides.
The system allows crops such as rocket, lettuce, Swiss chard, kale and tomatoes to be grown year-round — even during Malta's hottest summer months — inside greenhouses installed beneath solar panels. Nutrients are supplied naturally through fish and regenerated soil, while water and energy are continuously reused, dramatically reducing resource consumption.
According to the company, the system can use up to 90% less water than traditional agriculture while requiring minimal land — a critical factor for small, densely populated islands like Malta.
Bio Aqua Garden's approach recently received national recognition when the company won the Gold Award for Innovation in Agriculture at the Malta Business Awards. The award places BAG among a small group of local companies pushing the boundaries of how food can be produced sustainably in challenging environments.
