US (TX): Examining Houston’s sustainability plan before FIFA World Cup

With the FIFA World Cup just months away, the Houston host committee is already preparing for the global spotlight, and sustainability is at the center of the plan.

Andrew Gallagher, Executive Sustainability Chairperson for Out Houston, and Bart Womack, CEO of Even Grows Systems, shared how local restaurants, hotels, and small businesses are working together to create long-term environmental solutions that will extend far beyond the 2026 World Cup. The initiative brings together hospitality leaders, including JW Marriott Houston, along with local farmers, producers, and technology partners to strengthen food security, reduce environmental impact, and showcase Houston as a forward-thinking host city.

"We're going to be on the world stage for the FIFA World Cup," Gallagher said. "So, we want to really roll out the red carpet for everyone."

Womack explained that the same technology once designed to grow plants in space is now being used right here in Houston, supplying farm-to-table, non-GMO produce to local restaurants and hotels.
